I do {How To's} : Incorporating a Little "Something" of Tradition

Feb 21, 2011

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in her shoe”

No doubt you have heard the above saying many times. The old English rhyme was traditionally for the items the bride was given by family and attendants for good luck and a long marriage. Today, many brides take this tradition and make it their own. We love when our brides share the fun details of their “somethings”.

Here are a few ideas for you when selecting your something OLD, something NEW, something BORROWED and something BLUE.

SOMETHING OLD

The best items of something old are items that hold meaning to you or a loved one. Perhaps a broach worn by your mother, a ring from your grandmother or the cake cutting set your parents used at their wedding. Vintage items are great, but they mean so much more when they have a story that means something to you behind them.

Does you dad have an old car? Use it as your ceremony get away car or grand exit car or just for photos. Does your mom have a bracelet you LOVE? Ask to wear it.

Wishing someone who has passed on could be there with you on your special day? A family member’s rosary, dog tags, handkerchief could be added to your bridal bouquet. Wish you could fit in Mom’s dress? Cut a piece and wrap it around your bouquet instead of ribbon.

SOMETHING NEW

This one is the easiest. Most often, brides say their dress. I personally love when its fun sparkly jewelry or colorful shoes! Your something new can be the gift from your hubby to be or your engagement ring. Rather splurge? Get yourself a new clutch, head piece or new shoes.

SOMETHING BORROWED

Your something borrowed can be ultra creative or pretty simple. Borrow your sister’s veil, your maid of honor’s bracelet or Mom’s favorite earrings.

Once again, something special to you or your fiance is always nice. Use a friend’s former bridal comb, your grandmother’s ring or your bridesmaid’s petticoat.

SOMETHING BLUE

I have always wondered why blue? Apparently blue has always been a traditional color for weddings, symbolizing purity. You will find that many items such as garters, handkerchiefs, and bridal lingerie often have blue detailing.
